Ape Escape: Million Monkeys, known in Japan as Saru Get You Million Monkeys (サルゲッチュ ミリオンモンキーズ) is a platforming video game published and developed by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2, released a year after the previous mainline title Ape Escape 3. The game entered the "Best Of" franchise on March 15, 2007, less than a year after its original release date.

It is the sequel to Ape Escape: Pumped & Primed despite never being released in America or Europe. A European release was planned, but postponed and later cancelled in favor of Ape Escape 3 as their release dates were such a close match.

Plot[]

The game has two story plots to play. "Episode Kakeru" refers to Spike and his friends, while "Episode Specter" refers to Specter and his Pipo Monkeys. Both "Episodes" have their own plot, which involves slightly different gameplay and different sides of the story.

Episode Kakeru starts with Spike, Natalie, the Professor and Casi in her human body gathering in Tokyo when a gigantic battleship appears in the sky. From it emerge tons of armed Pipo Monkeys and new Mechs that the milotary tries to take down unsuccesfully. A news helicopter catches Specter on the battleship, seemingly having joined forces with a mysterious group of primates. Helga emerges from a crowd of people just in time to catch the news feed.

A new Goliath drops down behind Spike and his friends initiating the first battle of the game, and is fefeated. With the monkeys on the loose around the city, Spike and friends decide to catch them until they learn of a way to help. They manage to stop and take down a truck carrying weapons and armor through the city.

The team finds out about their next target via an "News Special Broadcasting," NSB News report. The monkeys have invaded over 30 world countries and an "Anti-Monkey World Defense" have been established with the help of over 43 countries. The monkeys are building a base armed with a laser beam cannon near an industrial complex by the coast of Kawasaki. Spike and crew head there and destroy it before the laser cannon is fired.

The NSB News confirm that the entire world is under the siege of the monkeys and the human militaries are no match for them. They gain sudden news of a battleship appearing over a baseball stadium in Yokohama, with armed monkeys and Flying Mech running loose there. They confirm it to be the same battleship Specter was spotted on, and Spike and his friends determine that to stop the monkeys they need to get on the battleship.

The heroes get onto the battleship and fight their way to the command deck to find Specter and his unarmed Pipo Monkeys. He is offended the heroes couldn't tell the Specter working with the primates was a fake, and gets angrier by the second. He taunts about them forgetting Helga, and begins a boss fight.

Spike defeats Specter, who gets even angrier by his loss. Pipotron G then leaps out to fight them, and when Specter gets furious by her interruption, she punches him into a wall and unconcious. After her defeat, a Mystery Man taunts them, and the ship starts breaking apart. Pipotron G saves Natalie and Casi from being crushed by falling debris but gets trapped underneath it herself.

While escaping, the team gets separated from Specter and his monkeys, but caught in a Virtual Space Trap which gets them stuck inside a virtual world. The one to set the trap was a Neo Pipotron named Pipotron Krack, who reformed the Professor's system of Casis in the city to create an army of Virus Casis to stop the heroes. Since the original Casi was outside of the network in a physical body, she was the only Casi not to be corrupted.

After defeating the Virus Casis, escaping a puzzle maze, and defeating a version of the virus program Grid Core, Spike and co. are able to escape the Virtual World Trap and find themselves still on the battleship. Their escape angers the Mystery Man, who kills Pipotron Krack and turns him into purple liquid as the punishment for his failure before Pipotron J's eyes.

Due to Spike and Specter's meddling, his plan of world domination has been completely ruined. However, the liquid of the fallen Neo Pipotrons has been incorporated into a final back up plan, and he proceeds to initialize it. Before he has the chance to do anything, Pipotron J lifts him up by the neck and begins to strangle him. The Mystery Man tries to electrocute him to be let go, but Pipotron J has no reaction to it. He instead uses it himself to add electrocution to the Mystery Man's torture. The battleship explodes and falls from the sky, with mysterious purple substances landing on the ground.

Another NSB News report turns on revealing that humans all over the world have been torn into two sides both for the monkeys and against the monkeys. The monkeys have began spreading propaganda posters with "Under the Monkey - With the Monkey" on them, while some citisens have began practicing the use of nets and monkey traps to capture the monkeys.

Following the crash of the battleship, mysterious new lifeforms called Blobs have begun to appear all over Tokyo, and are now invading it with the monkeys. Spike and co. fight the mutated lifeform in the same stadium the battleship appeared in until he escapes. An injured Helga has been investigating the phenomenom until she runs into the rest of the heroes. She tells she needs to get to a computer and find out what the Blobs are. Since Helga needs to be protected but the Blobs held back, they choose to split up. Spike, while flustered by the idea, goes to escort Helga to reactivate the monkeys' laser, while Natalie, the Professor and Casi go out to fight the Blobs. He leaves to help as soon as she's safely inside.

Helga calls in to report her findings that the Blobs are invincible and can only be destroyed with a special Gadget. The Gadget is on a truck that the original Pipotrons are driving through the city while shooting at the Blobs. Spike gets confused why she wants to protect the Pipotrons, but the group desides to help.

Spike, Natalie, Professor, and Casi all head out to fight the Mother Tentacle that has revealed itself. Spike renders her powerless and rushes to save the city from more apes, protecting the Pipotrons' truck amids the Blobs. The Gadget inside is a Super Gadget called the Satellite Laser.

Another NSB News report shows growing support for the Pipo Monkeys amids the global chaos. The mutated Blobs are revealed to truly orginate from the battleship. Footage from the crash shows a large green blob forming inside it. Meanwhile on land the Blobs are starting to take over the monkeys' abandoned Mechs and wreck havok in Tokyo. Spike and crew defeat them and head to the crashed battleship.

The final boss is a creature called Blob Core, a far stronger and larger mutant Blob. The Heroes use the Satellite Laser to shoot a laser beam into space, which bounces off a satellite back to Earth and into the Blob Core, destroying it. With the Blobs all gone, the monkey army retreats, and the world returns back to normal.

Episode Specter starts with the same cutscene as Episode Kakeru, showing the battleships' invation of Tokyo. Just as the newsfeed showing Specter on the battleship is shown, the location shifts to Specter on vacation, having gone off the grid to be in peace for a moment. His relaxation is interrupted when the Pipo Monkeys rush to tell him that the monkeys have started to take over the world without his permission. He catches the news report showing his copy on the battleship with the Neo Pipotrons, and, furious of someone trying to use his likeness and his monkeys for world conquer, goes to defeat the imposter and get back his monkeys. Specter and the few monkeys he had with him then skyfall into Tokyo.

As soon as they land, they're face to face with the Armored Goliath. Specter defeats it and it retreats to the battleship. Knowing his monkeys can't tell he's the real Specter, he has to capture the monkeys with a special Monkey Net of his own. He stops the truck full of weaponry and armor for the apes in Spike and co.'s stead.

Specter finds out about their next target via an NSB News report. The monkeys have invaded over 30 world countries and an "Anti-Monkey World Defense" have been established with the help of over 43 countries. The monkeys are building a base armed with a laser beam cannon near an industrial complex by the coast of Kawasaki. Specter and his monkeys head there and destroy it before the laser cannon is fired.

They gain sudden news of a battleship appearing over a baseball stadium in Yokohama, with armed monkeys and Flying Mech running loose there. They confirm it to be the same battleship "Specter" was spotted on, and Specter and his monkeys rush to get on the battleship.

The monkeys get onto the battleship and fight their way to the command deck to find "Specter". He taunts Specter for how easy he was to take over, and Specter initiates the bossfight. After the impostor is defeated, it's revealed he was one of the Neo Pipotrons, Pipotron Meta, able to take the form of any living creature. The Mystery Man and Neo Pipotrons appear, and while Pipotron G tries to comfort Pipotron Meta, the Mystery Man kills him, turning him into purple liquid for failing him.

Pipotron Krack quickly steps in to tell him about new intruders aboard the battleship. Before Specter could stop them from leaving, his Pipo Monkeys begin to scream about who the intruders are. He is still in the room as Spike and his friends run in. He is offended the heroes couldn't tell the Specter working with the primates was a fake, and gets angrier by the second. He taunts about them forgetting Helga and begins a boss fight against Spike and Natalie.

Specter fights the mutated lifeform in the same stadium the battleship appeared in until it escapes. An injured Helga has been investigating the phenomenom until she runs into him. She tells them to go home before wincing by her hurt leg. Specter tells the monkeys to help her, which surprises her, until he's laughing about a human being saved by monkeys and her owing him a debt. The monkeys find out where to take Helga to get her to the cannon's controls and data, so they escort her to the correct location.

Helga calls in to report her findings that the Blobs are invincible and can only be destroyed with a special Gadget. The Gadget is on a truck that the original Pipotrons are driving through the city while shooting at the Blobs, and Helga asks them to protect it. He gets angry about having to protect them, but once Helga yells at him and asks again, he reluctantly goes to help.

Specter and the monkeys head out to fight the Mother Tentacle that has revealed itself. Specter renders her powerless and rushes to protect the Pipotrons' truck amids the Blobs. The Gadget inside is a Super Gadget called the Satellite Laser.

Colosseum mode is a Hi-Tech Tournament mode where Spike, Natalie, Professor, Casi, Helga, Specter, the Pipo Monkeys, the Pipotrons, Pipotron G, and unlockable characters are able to participate.

Gameplay[]

The gameplay uses the action based gameplay from Ape Escape: Pumped & Primed and mixes it with the platforming ape catching of the mainline games. Players use different weapons to destroy machines and creatures lurking throughout the city. Players also use Gadgets to defeat and catch monkeys. Each mission requires a different goal. Sometimes you will need to defeat a boss, other times you will need to defeat a set of targets, defend certain characters or weapons that will help you throughout the game or sometimes you just need to capture a set of monkeys.

Each mission containing monkeys has up to 100 monkeys available for capture. The more you capture, the more "Gotcha Points" get added to your total score, which helps you unlock certain items in various ways. Missions #18 and #19 differ from the rest of the game as they require you to solve virtual puzzles within a time limit. This is the only occasion where Gadgets are not necessary to win the mission.

Playable Characters[]

All of the playable characters from Ape Escape: Pumped & Primed return in this game. For the first time ever in the Ape Escape series, Specter is playable. Helga, Jake, Pipotrons, Dark Jake and Dark Specter are unlockable characters, but Dark Jake and Dark Specter are only playable in Coliseum Mode and Multiplayer Mode. Four new characters, Pipotron G, Legend, Volcano, and Virus Casi are playable, with only Legend, Volcano and Virus Casi only being playable in Coliseum Mode.

Trivia[]

  • With 15 playable characters (24 if you count the Pipotron Trio and Monkey Team as separate characters), Ape Escape: Million Monkeys has the most playable characters in any Ape Escape game.
  • This is the last Ape Escape game released on the PlayStation 2.
  • All of the NSB News cutscenes are filmed with real actors, and have region-accurate languages under a japanese voiceover. Despite this the game has no subtitles.
  • While monkeys are invading the entire world, most of the game takes place in Japan. What doesn't happen in Japan happens in the virtual world.
