In Gusty Gateway, the opening area of Memory Meadow, two Bots are acting out a scene from Ape Escape while another Bot films them. One is hiding in the bushes with a red siren light on his head, while the other pretends to look for them holding a large net.
Astro's Playroom has many references to other PlayStation games in a similar fashion, such as:
- Robbit from Jumping Flash
- Sir Daniel from MediEvil
- Crash and Baku from Crash Bandicoot
- Spyro from Spyro the Dragon
- Snake from Metal Gear Solid
- PaRappa the Rapper
- Jak and Daxter
- Toro and Kuro from Doko Demo Issyo
- Ratchet and Clank
- Sly Cooper
- Helghast soldiers from Killzone
- Sackboy from LittleBigPlanet
- Kratos from God of War
- and more.
The game was developed by Team Asobi, who originated from Sony's Japan Studio division, the developers of Ape Escape. Indeed, the style of parody at work here is not unlike the kind seen in Ape Escape 3, with monkeys filming for Specter TV.
